IT ALL STARTED WHEN…

I picked up a tomahawk over ten years ago. My dad has been a member of the Detroit Sportsmen’s Congress for the majority of my life. He took me out the black powder range to teach me how to shoot a muzzleloader rifle. After shooting about eight times in a half-hour - muzzleloading is incredibly time consuming - I asked why there were logs sitting on easels on the other end of the field. He took me over and taught me about their tomahawk and knife throwing competitions. After the first throw, which missed horribly, I was hooked. Over the following months and years, we tried every tomahawk, axe, hatchet, and knife we could throw. My brother even bought some items that looked straight out of the Klingon Field and Stream Catalog.

During those years, I worked my way through a Computer Engineering degree as a tutor and student instructor. After school, I spent some time in the automotive field, but felt unfulfilled. I had spent a large portion of high school and college tutoring or teaching in some capacity. I eventually left engineering to find something that suited me better. I found out that competitive axe throwing existed outside of the Stihl lumberjack competition. I split my time between tutoring and working as an axe coach at local venues. I decided that I wanted to work towards improving the sport of axe throwing and expanding its reach.

Total Axe Clinton Township finally opened in November 2018 as Macomb County’s first axe throwing venue. Since then we’ve introduced Michigan Rules Axe Throwing to thousands of people. Our leagues have attracted hundred of people. We have held over a dozen tournaments, with throwers from all over the United States and Canada. Recently we have added the capacity for star throwing, knife throwing, and even shovel throwing! We can’t wait to see what the future brings as we continue to evolve.
